A Study of the Dali Bai Sanxian from the Perspective of Intangible Cultural Heritage

Authors: Yuning Zhao

Abstract - The Bai sanxian is an important musical instrument associated with several intangible cultural heritage (ICH) elements recognized at various administrative levels in Dali Prefecture. Adopting an ICH perspective, this study proposes a novel classification of the Dali Bai sanxian into three traditions: the Dali Dabenqu sanxian, the Jianchuan Baiqu sanxian, and the Heqing Dianbei Tiangengdiao sanxian. Drawing on fieldwork and documentary research, the study examines these three traditions in terms of their accompaniment practices, performance techniques, and representative solo repertoire. It argues that the Bai sanxian has an inherent affinity with, and exists in a symbiotic relationship with, the intangible cultural heritage of the Dali Bai people. At present, however, the Dali region tends to privilege vocal performance over the sanxian. This imbalance not only hinders the transmission and development of Dali's intangible cultural heritage but also undermines efforts to preserve and develop the cultural and artistic traditions associated with the Dali Bai sanxian. Protecting the Dali Bai sanxian therefore offers a new pathway toward the sustainable development of Dali's intangible cultural heritage.
