Interfacing Musicians and Technologies in a Laptop Orchestra

Abstract - In this article, some possible strategies of interaction between the various components of a live electroacoustic music ensemble using laptops as main instruments will be proposed and discussed, with particular reference to the production and repertoire of the Arazzi Laptop Ensemble, one of the first and longest-running groups of this kind born in Italy. After a brief summary of the fundamentals of a laptop orchestra and a technical overview of the types of data involved, three different practical approaches to transmitting and sharing of musical information will be considered.
