Beginner piano lessons: effective instructional words and methods to foster growth

Abstract - This study examines the instruction given to beginner piano learners and the type of words used by the instructor to foster the advancement of learners through remote learning using piano lessons via a TV program that aims to develop rich and proactive performances. The findings indicated that the learners engaged beyond sight-reading and playing from the music sheet. They demonstrated a comprehensive approach by listening to the piano, singing, reading, writing, playing the dictated notes, memorizing notes, and employing their senses to accomplish different tasks. The instructor frequently utilized specific words in response to learners' performances. These included expressions for approval when the instructor was giving praise, feeling impressed, and when the learners' showed improvements. Another strategy that the instructor employed in exhibiting approval was highlighting the positive aspects of learners' progress and addressing them by name. A consistent correlation was notably observed between the learners' reactions and the instructor's choice of words. According to the results of the survey on the instruction and instructional language conducted by this research, the ones on reading music scores and listening to the nuances of rhythm were the most frequent and helpful. The results were consistent with the teaching practices of the TV program "Piano no okeiko" or in English, "Piano lesson" and with the needs of the students. Effective language included: praise, advice, encouragement and improvement. The results exhibited the need for individualized reactions toward each student in giving responses based on their level and personality.
